The Chelsea Painters originated in 1967. Betty Maxwell, a dance instructor and painter, took a small group of people and mentored them in the art of painting. She instilled her love of art to her students, most of whom had never before painted.
Some of those same artists are still part of Chelsea Painters today; they have continued in that mentorship. After Betty retired in the 1980’s, she left the group in the capable hands of Madeleine Vallier, who served as President of Chelsea Painters from 1984 to 1995.
In 1974, Betty oversaw the group begin to share their art with the community in a park-like setting of the Chelsea Community Hospital in Chelsea, MI.
