Many of Mary Beth’s acrylic paintings include architectural elements, particularly Washtenaw County barns. Using a representational style, she strives not for photographic reproduction, but to achieve a painterly quality to her work.

Since she usually works directly from her photographs, her camera is always with her. Her favorite pictures show horizontal sunlight, dewy atmosphere, unusual colors of nature, wispy and distinct cloud formations and architectural angles.

Mary Beth is especially interested in recording the elements of time’s impacts on our lovely barns, highlighting their stateliness, but also their aging and demise. Imagine the history these monoliths have seen, the seasons they have withstood and the work they have guarded. She fears that in her lifetime most will be gone, and so she’s compelled to capture these fleeting moments, solidified in a fraction of time, and portray them on canvas.
