‘Full Moon Rising’, Acrylic on canvas 24 x 34″

Jim can’t remember when painting and drawing weren’t a part of his life. As a child, he was encouraged by his grandmother, also an artist, who noticed his sketches and gave him a box of oil paints. During grade school, he took extracurricular painting classes at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Institute, and continued to study art throughout high school and college. Earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Wittenberg University, Jim focused on painting courses, but his major also included commercial art courses to address his future financial needs (and appease his father).

Jim worked as an art director, illustrator, and graphic designer for ad agencies in Pittsburgh and Ann Arbor before opening Rehlin Graphics, which provided creative services for 20+ years to SE Michigan clients. He continued to paint and draw as time allowed, occasionally selling work to companies and individuals. Early in 2014, Jim re-focused full time to fine art, with his acrylic paintings and colored pencil drawings being displayed and sold around Michigan in juried exhibitions, art galleries, and artist markets, and sold nationally through commissions.

Jim has been influenced by the light studies of the Impressionists, the pointillism of Seurat, and the brushwork of Van Gogh. Driven by abstract expressionism to move beyond purely representational images — to capture the underlying spirit and vitality of the subject matter — his approach has evolved into his energy style. Building layers of complexity into his art, and sometimes hiding little surprises, Jim gets his inspiration from nature and all the amazing life around him.
